Artist promotion campaign for R&B artist

The Client

An independent R&B artist with four years of releases, a small but dedicated fanbase of roughly 12,000 monthly listeners, and genuine talent. He had been releasing singles and EPs consistently, but each release followed the same pattern: a brief spike from existing fans, a few playlist submissions that went nowhere, and then a slow decline back to baseline. He was not growing — he was treading water.

The Challenge

The artist was doing everything he had been told to do — posting on social media, submitting to playlists, releasing consistently — but nothing was compounding. The diagnosis revealed three problems:

  • Isolated releases, no strategy. Each release was treated as a standalone event. There was no pre-release build, no coordinated rollout, and no post-release momentum plan. Every release started from zero and returned to zero.
  • Single-channel promotion. He was only using playlist submissions. No paid advertising, no social strategy, no PR, no creator campaigns, no YouTube. He was relying on one channel that was not working.
  • No geographic expansion. His entire audience was concentrated in one country. He had never run campaigns targeted at international markets, despite his genre having global appeal.

The Strategy

We built a full artist promotion campaign — not a single tactic, but a coordinated strategy across every channel that contributes to audience growth. The campaign was structured around an EP release with three lead singles, each getting its own mini-campaign within the larger eight-month strategy.

1. Release Strategy & Planning

We rebuilt the release calendar: three singles spaced six weeks apart, leading into the EP drop. Each single got a four-week campaign arc — announcement, pre-save, release day, and sustained push. The EP drop was positioned as the culmination, not just another release.

2. Spotify & Streaming Promotion

We ran coordinated Spotify campaigns for each release — editorial pitching, independent curator outreach, profile optimization, and canvas videos. Each pitch was timed to the release schedule and tailored to editorial playlist focuses. See our Spotify marketing approach →

3. Social Media Growth

We developed a content system that turned the artist's natural creativity into consistent output — behind-the-scenes recording footage, songwriting stories, live performance clips, and day-in-the-life content. Each piece was designed to drive traffic to smart links and streaming profiles.

4. Paid Advertising

We ran targeted Meta and YouTube ad campaigns for each release, targeting audiences with genre affinity for comparable R&B artists. We optimized toward cost-per-stream and used retargeting to convert listeners from one single into followers who streamed the next.

5. PR & Publicity

We ran a PR campaign alongside the EP release — securing reviews, interviews, and features in R&B and culture publications. The press coverage built credibility that made the advertising and playlist pitching more effective. See our PR services →

6. Creator Campaigns

We ran a TikTok creator campaign with 12 creators whose audiences overlapped with the artist's target listeners. Two creator posts went semi-viral organically, and we amplified them with Spark Ads — driving a significant spike in discovery and streaming conversion. See our creator marketing →

7. YouTube Strategy

We optimized the artist's YouTube channel, created visualizer content for each single, and ran YouTube Shorts campaigns. YouTube became a second discovery engine that drove viewers to full music videos and then to streaming profiles.

8. International Promotion

We ran targeted ad campaigns and playlist pitching in three new geographic markets — the UK, Germany, and Brazil — where comparable R&B artists had strong listener bases. Within four months, each market showed meaningful audience growth.

The Channels

  • Spotify & streaming — editorial pitching, curator outreach, profile optimization
  • Meta advertising — Instagram and Facebook campaigns with genre-affinity targeting
  • YouTube advertising — in-stream ads and Shorts campaigns
  • Social media — organic content strategy across Instagram and TikTok
  • PR — press releases, journalist outreach, reviews, and interviews
  • Creator marketing — 12 TikTok creators with Spark Ad amplification
  • YouTube channel — optimization, visualizers, and Shorts
  • International campaigns — targeted promotion in UK, Germany, and Brazil

The Execution

The campaign ran over eight months. Each single release followed a coordinated arc across all channels simultaneously — ads launched on release day, PR pitches went out the week before, creator content posted during release week, and social content ran throughout. The EP drop was the culmination, with all channels activated at maximum intensity.

The international campaigns ran in parallel starting in month three, once the domestic campaign had built enough data to identify which creative and messaging would translate to new markets.

The Results (8 Months)

  • 3.5x increase in total streams — from approximately 35k monthly streams to a sustained 120k+ across the catalog
  • 45,000 monthly listeners — up from a baseline of 12,000 at the start
  • Expansion into three new geographic markets — UK, Germany, and Brazil now each represent 8-15% of the artist's monthly listeners
  • 14 editorial playlist placements across Spotify and Apple Music
  • 2.5x follower growth on Spotify — building a lasting audience that returns for every release
  • 5M+ video views across TikTok creator content and YouTube Shorts
  • 12 press features — including reviews, interviews, and a premiere in a genre-leading publication
  • $0.041 cost per stream — optimized through continuous analysis across Meta and YouTube

Why It Worked

Multi-channel coordination compounded. No single channel would have produced these results. Spotify pitching alone would have earned some placements. Paid ads alone would have driven some streams. PR alone would have generated some coverage. But running all of them simultaneously, coordinated around the same release schedule, meant each channel reinforced the others. The PR coverage gave the ad campaigns credibility. The creator content gave the social strategy viral moments. The Spotify optimization converted the listeners every channel drove.

Release cadence built compounding momentum. Three singles leading into an EP, each with a full campaign arc, gave every channel consistent signal over eight months. Each release launched with more momentum than the last because the audience from the previous release was still engaged.

International expansion was data-driven. We did not guess which markets to target. We used the domestic campaign data to identify where comparable artists had strong listener bases, then ran targeted campaigns in those markets. The result was efficient expansion into three new territories with minimal wasted spend.
