The Client
An independent electronic-pop artist with three years of releases, a small but loyal fanbase, and genuine production talent. She had been releasing music consistently but had no coordinated Spotify strategy — songs went up, got a brief spike from her existing fans, and then faded. Monthly listeners had plateaued at around 6,000 and were slowly declining.
The Challenge
The artist's music was genuinely good — well-produced, genre-appropriate, and with a distinctive sound. But her Spotify presence was working against her in three ways:
- No release coordination. Singles were dropped whenever they were finished, with no pre-save campaigns, no pitch preparation, and no coordinated rollout. Every release had to build momentum from zero.
- Unoptimized Spotify profile. Her Spotify for Artists profile was incomplete — no canvas videos, no artist pick, generic bio, and metadata that did not align with how her target audience discovered music. The algorithm had little signal to work with.
- No pitching strategy. She had submitted to a handful of playlists manually and heard nothing back. There was no targeted pitching list, no relationship building with curators, and no editorial submission strategy.
The Strategy
We built a full-ecosystem Spotify campaign — not a single tactic, but a coordinated strategy that addressed every layer of Spotify growth. The campaign was built around a six-month rollout of three singles leading into an EP, with each release compounding on the last.
1. Distribution & Release Coordination
Before any promotion began, we coordinated the release infrastructure. We aligned with her distributor on release timing, ensured metadata was clean and consistent across all tracks, set up ISRC and UPC codes correctly, and scheduled each release with enough lead time for pitching. Pre-save campaigns were built for every single, with smart links that captured email signups and tracked conversion data.
2. Editorial Pitching & Playlist Strategy
We submitted each release to Spotify editorial through the Spotify for Artists submission tool — but not with a generic pitch. We crafted pitch narratives tailored to each editorial playlist's focus, highlighting the artist's unique positioning, comparable artists, and why the track fit the playlist's editorial direction. Submissions were filed four weeks before each release date.
In parallel, we built a targeted list of 200+ independent curators across genre-relevant playlist networks. Each pitch was personalized, timed to the release schedule, and followed up systematically. We tracked every submission and response.
3. Paid Advertising to Spotify
We ran targeted ad campaigns on Meta and YouTube designed to drive qualified listeners to her Spotify profile. Meta campaigns targeted audiences with genre affinity for comparable electronic-pop artists, with creative built around her strongest tracks. YouTube in-stream ads captured attention with music video snippets and drove viewers to stream on Spotify.
We optimized toward cost-per-stream, not vanity metrics — reallocating budget to the audiences and creatives that actually drove streaming conversions. Retargeting campaigns converted listeners who engaged with one release into followers who streamed the next.
4. Spotify Profile Optimization & Discoverability
We overhauled her Spotify presence completely. New artist bio and professional images, canvas videos created for every track, an artist pick that showcased her best-performing song, and discovery mode enabled on proven tracks. Her profile metadata was rewritten to align with how her target audience searched for and discovered music.
This is the Spotify SEO layer — optimizing the artist's profile, metadata, bio, and positioning to improve discoverability within Spotify's search and discovery systems. It was one important component of the broader campaign, not the entire strategy. We did not make claims about "ranking" her on Spotify. We optimized her presence so that the listeners our pitching and advertising drove to her profile had a better chance of converting into saves, follows, and repeat listens.
The Channels
- Spotify editorial pitching — via Spotify for Artists submission tool
- Independent curator outreach — 200+ genre-relevant playlist curators
- Meta advertising — Instagram and Facebook campaigns targeting genre-affinity audiences
- YouTube advertising — in-stream ads with music video creative
- Spotify profile optimization — canvas, bio, artist pick, metadata, discoverability
- Pre-save and smart link campaigns — for every release
The Execution
The campaign ran over six months, structured around three single releases and one EP drop. Each release followed the same arc: four weeks of pitch preparation and audience warming, two weeks of pre-save and ad seeding, release-week activation with coordinated ad launches and playlist follow-ups, and two weeks of post-release retargeting and algorithmic feeding.
As each release landed editorial and independent playlist placements, the resulting streams improved her algorithmic signals — which led to appearances in Discover Weekly and Release Radar, which drove additional organic discovery. Each release launched with more momentum than the last.
The Results (6 Months)
- 4x increase in Spotify streams — from approximately 40k monthly streams to a sustained 160k+ across her catalog
- 80,000+ monthly listeners — up from a baseline of 6,000 at the start of the campaign
- 18 editorial playlist placements — across genre flagship playlists that introduced her to entirely new audiences
- 220% growth in Spotify followers — building a lasting audience that returns for every new release
- 60+ independent playlist placements — each one introducing her music to new listener communities
- Consistent algorithmic traction — Discover Weekly and Release Radar now drive a steady baseline of new listener discovery every week
- $0.034 cost per stream — optimized through continuous ad performance analysis and budget reallocation
Why It Worked
The ecosystem approach compounded. No single tactic would have produced these results. Editorial pitching alone would have earned some placements. Paid ads alone would have driven some streams. Profile optimization alone would have improved conversion. But combining all of them — coordinated around the same release schedule — meant each tactic reinforced the others. The ads drove listeners to an optimized profile that converted them. The playlist placements improved algorithmic signals that fed organic discovery. The pre-saves gave each release first-day momentum that made editorial teams more likely to notice.
Release cadence unlocked algorithmic momentum. Three singles leading into an EP, each with a full campaign arc, gave Spotify's algorithm consistent signals over six months. The compounding effect of regular, well-executed releases was the single biggest driver of sustained growth.
Spotify SEO was the optimization layer, not the strategy. Profile optimization and discoverability improvements made every other tactic more effective — but they did not drive growth on their own. They were one component of a coordinated campaign that included pitching, advertising, and audience acquisition. That is how Spotify SEO works best: as a layer that amplifies the rest of the strategy.
